This study sheds light on the extent of physical and psychological violence as well as sexual abuse against children and young people in Denmark. The study looks at violence and sexual abuse in two ways. It describes the broad spectrum of physical and psychological violence and sexual abuse to which children and young people have been exposed. This means from less serious incidents to very serious abuse. It also illustrates cases of physical mistreatment and sexual abuse that fall within the framework of the Criminal Code and for which there has been a conviction.
Among other things, the study shows that:
• one out of six children are exposed to physical violence in the home,
• one out of 12 children are exposed to psychological violence from a parent,
• 5% of children and young people between 7 and 18 years-old have been exposed to serious violence and 1% have been exposed to sexual abuse.
• the perpetrators and victims have often had the same disadvantaged upbringing.
The study also identifies the important risk factors behind children or young people being exposed to violence and sexual abuse. Finally, the study describes risk factors for becoming the perpetrator of violence or abuse against a child or youth.
