Pia Kürstein Kjellberg is head of research at VIVE – The Danish Center for Social Science Research. She holds a PhD in Organization and has more than 30 years of experience in research, analysis, and evaluation within the healthcare and long-term care sectors.

Her work focuses on the organization, governance, and management of health and elder care systems, with a particular emphasis on the development and implementation of new care models. She has extensive experience in evaluating reforms and innovation initiatives, including self-managing and interdisciplinary teams, reablement, integrated care approaches, and Buurtzorg-inspired models in municipal elder care.

A central theme in her research is how organizational structures and governance mechanisms can support more coherent, person-centred, and efficient care pathways. She has conducted numerous evaluations of municipal development projects aimed at improving quality of care, coordination across sectors, and citizen involvement. Her work also includes analyses of regulatory and inspection models, as well as studies of system responses during the COVID-19 pandemic in elder care.

Methodologically, Pia Kürstein Kjellberg works primarily with qualitative approaches, including interviews and case studies, often combined with quantitative data sources in mixed-method designs. Her research is characterized by a strong focus on implementation processes and organizational learning in practice.

Throughout her career, she has held senior research management positions at VIVE and its predecessor organizations (KORA and DSI). She has also contributed to international research environments, including serving as a member of the portfolio board of the Research Council of Norway.
